Steve Maturo ’93

Groton’s ideal of service crystallized for Steve Maturo ’93 when he was on a surgical mission, treating underprivileged children in South America. “There, I realized the true importance of service to others,” he said. “Groton not only prepared me for young adult life after high school, but also laid the foundation for service in the years since.”

For Steve, the years after graduation were anything but ordinary. “I entered the United States Air Force Academy,” he said, “where my college experience varied from eating ants in survival school to learning how to fly to playing intercollegiate hockey.” He co-captained the team his senior year.

Four years of medical school and a surgery internship prepared him for his next job—as a flight surgeon for an Air Force fighter squadron. “I got to fly in the back seat of an F-16 once a week,” he said. After two years as a flight surgeon, Steve began a four-year residency in otolaryngology, then did further sub-specialty training in pediatric otolaryngology and head and neck surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary/Harvard Medical School.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to have attended Groton,” he said, “where the faculty, coaches, staff, and fellow students helped me mature and understand the importance of service, community, diversity, and tolerance.”
