Great Effort, Sad Result

Ted Goodrich
Groton recovered from last Friday to put on a tremendous effort against undefeated Nobles. Max Strong clanked a shot off the bottom of the crossbar in the first half from distance, and the Groton defense held Nobles’ potent attack in check, so the half ended 0-0. Maintaining their energy, Groton came out strong in the second half and went ahead when Strong slipped a perfect pass through to a streaking PK Kenyon, and PK slotted the ball home. Unfortunately, this lead and the celebration were short-lived as Nobles earned a penalty kick just moments later. Not dispirited, Groton continued to play well, and it was Strong connecting with PK again on a corner kick to regain the lead. PK’s snap header caught the inside of the far post for his second goal of the day. Even after Nobles’ Harry Rogers broke through to tie the game, Groton maintained their energy and commitment. An unfortunate defensive lapse allowed Nobles to earn another goal late the game, but Groton finished pounding away at the Nobles net. As disheartening as it was to not even walk away with a point, Groton played very well.
