Middlesex 1-1

That nor’easter has threatened all week, but today, though gray and quite windy in Groton, was a good day for field hockey, and what a great way to go into long weekend. From the opening whistle, the girls played a great first half, with confidence and hustle. Halfway through, a scramble at a corner and some heads up play resulted in a goal when Cassidy Thibodeau was in just the right place at just the right moment. Such a confidence booster to go ahead of a strong opponent, one who has bested us too many times! The second half saw a tenacious Middlesex team dominate for some of the time, but an equally determined Groton squad refused to roll over and play dead. Middlesex tied the game early in the second half, and then both teams fought hard to try to get the upper hand. At the end of regulation time the score was still tied. An overtime period in field hockey is fun – seven v. seven, ten minutes, sudden victory. Exhausted girls run the length of the field, sprinting forward on attack and racing back on defense, looking for passing opportunities but often finding more luck with long solo runs. The ten minutes ran down without a score, so the game stands as a tie. And off everyone went for a much needed long weekend.
