Groton sweeps the NEPSITT Championships!

It was a fitting way to end a great season. Groton entered three singles players and one doubles team in NEPSITT (New England Prep School Invitational Tennis Tournament). This tournament, held at Choate, is open to all New England players, and is often a showcase of some of the best singles and doubles around.

In the words of our headmaster, Groton simply "showed up," ready to play and ready to win. The results were impressive. Groton won both the singles event as well as the doubles!

In singles, Matt Kandel, the top seed, easily beat his opponents in all rounds. His final match was against a talented player from St. Paul's. Matt was razor sharp, moving his oppoent all around the court, and challenging him with powerful serves. Matt won in straight sets, finishing off a breathtaking year of play in which he clearly established himself among the top one or two players in the region.

Meanwhile, in the doubles draw, Third Formers Ben Jones and Jared Gura showed why they were one of New England's most successful doubles teams this season. In fact, they lost only one match this spring, out of over twenty matches played both in tournaments and in head-to head school contests. Today, the duo found themselves in the finals against a strong Choate team, and delivered a straight set victory, including a thrilling tie-breaker in the second set.

This year is the best result ever for Groton at NEPSITT. It was a wonderfully fun day of tennis with strong play also by Captain Andrew Yang and Fifth Former Powers Trigg, who won the consolation tournament after one loss in the main draw.

The sun has now officially set on the 2019 Boys Tennis season. What a year it was!
