Groton cruises to win over St. George’s

Groton’s bats led the way for the second straight game as they put up 11 runs, topping St. George’s 11-2. Groton scored in 5 of the 6 innings they came to the plate and put up crooked numbers in four of those innings. Freshman AJ Colarusso notched 11 strikeouts in 5 strong innings of work to secure his first league win for Groton. Senior captain Drew Burke led the way offensively for the Zebras, collecting two doubles and 3 RBI, while junior Luke Beckstein scored four times after reaching on a single and three walks.

Groton kicked off the scoring in the first when Beckstein walked, advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw, and scored on a single from Bennett Smith; after a stolen base, Shane Kim then singled in Smith. In the third, Beckstein singled and stole second, advancing to third when the throw went into the outfield. After Smith was hit by a pitch, the Zebras pulled off a double steal to plate their third run. Groton would add two more later in the inning thanks to a walk, an error, and an RBI groundout from Robbie Long.

St. George’s strung together three two out hits in the top of the fourth to plate two runs and keep the game in reach, but they gave them back in the bottom half thanks to a pair of walks, an error, and wild pitch. Groton would add another in the 5th when Thomas Dempsey singled and came around on Burke’s first double, then three more in the 6th on a bases loaded walk to Josh Nam followed by another double from Burke.

Colarusso allowed only three hits on the day, and picked off two runners in addition to his 11 strikeouts. Dempsey pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game, and Burke threw out two runners on the basepaths.
