Groton fights back to top Thayer

Groton scored single runs in the 5th and 6th innings to earn a hard fought 3-2 victory over Thayer, with Josh Nam putting in a gritty performance on the mound to earn the complete game victory. Thayer led for 2-1 for most of the game, before a booming double by Walker Davey scored Drew Burke to knot the game in the bottom of the 5th. In the 6th, Bennett Smith led off with a hard single past shortstop, then stole second and third. With one out, Robbie Long put down a perfect suicide squeeze to easily score Smith. After walking the leadoff batter in the 3rd, Nam retired 14 in a row, starting with a beautiful double play started by Smith as he ranged well to his left. With two outs in the top of the 7th, though, Thayer put runners on 2nd and 3rd on a double down the third base line and an error. Nam buckled down to strike out the next batter and finish the game. Thayer's first two batters of the game reached on a single and a walk, then would come around to score on a fielder's choice and another single. Groton got one back in the bottom half of the 1st when Luke Beckstein doubled with one out, then scored on a single by Shane Kim. Nam finished with 4 strikeouts and allowed only 4 hits.
