Opening Day: Groton defeats Deerfield on the road!

John Conner
After a season for the ages in 2018, the Groton boys tennis team began its new campaign on Saturday, as the squad headed to Deerfield for 2019's inaugural match. The boys worked hard over spring break and in the first few days of the term to be ready to play some very exciting tennis. The match began very well, as Matt Kandel and Powers Trigg won at #1 Doubles, while Aaron Jin and Gabe Scholl followed suit at #2. With the doubles point secure, it was onto singles. The boys proved resilient, winning many points after very long rallies. By the end of the afternoon, Groton had won five of the six singles matches. Kandel, Scholl, and Trigg all notched straight set wins, while Jared Gura and Ben Jones were also victorious at #5 and #6. Their Deerfield opponents were all strong players, and the sportsmanship on both sides was exemplary. Rounding out the play were exhibition matches by Noah Bay and Alan Du, who add to the depth of this year's team. Next week brings Exeter and the Kingswood Oxford tournament.
