I began the summer reading required for rising Fifth Formers a few days ago. I put it off this long to separate myself from the idea of school. I mean it is summer after all. Since August is moving quite quickly, however, and school is right around the corner, I begrudgingly decided to open the book that had been sitting unopened on my desk for the past two months.
When I picked up Ruth Ozeki’s A Tale for the Time Being for the first time, I imagined it would be long and boring and a pain to get into. Luckily, however, I have not been able to put the book down since I picked it up. I have taken this book with me everywhere I have been over the past few days. The last time I have been this into a book was when I read the entire Harry Potter series over a span of two and a half weeks the summer going into fourth grade.
I have read many great books in my short time as a literate human being, but only a few have kept me as engaged as A Tale for the Time Being. Even fewer have been summer reading assignments. While reading the book over the past few days, I’ve become increasingly excited for English class this year. Typically, I do not enjoy English as I tend to enjoy math and science courses more. I just get a feeling that English this year will be very fun. I received my class assignments recently, and I noticed I have English with Ms. Gracey. I’ve heard great things about her and her class from my friends so I’m very excited.
I think I’ve reached the point in the summer where you kind of get bored of all the free time and you start itching to get back to school. I have definitely started to want to go back because it means I get to see my friends, whom I haven’t seen in a long while. Let’s just say I can’t wait for school to start.
