New Year, Same Team

Without fail, one of the things I look forward to most returning to the Circle is soccer season. I’ve played soccer since I was in elementary school and it was one of the first groups that welcomed me when I arrived at Groton. Every soccer season starts the same way: with a week-long preseason before classes. This period of time is unique in that is devoid of any work or commitments outside of the team. It is a great opportunity to get to know some of the younger players and reconnect with friends after the summer.
As classes pick up, soccer is no longer my primary focus. It is, however, still one of the things I look forward to the most during the day. Some of my closest friends are on the team and we always start our practice with a “social warm-up.” As we’re getting touches and passing the ball, we’re also all sharing funny stories from our day. It’s a great way to take a break during an often busy fall. Our chatter usually continues longer than our coaches would like, but I like to think it improves our performance.

This stretch of the season is particularly exciting. During the upcoming weeks, we face many of our toughest competitors. So far our season has gone pretty well, with back to back wins against our first two ISL opponents, with a combined score of 6-0. The team is shaping up to be good, and we’re looking towards playoffs as we head into the upcoming, harder games. For now, though, I get to spend every afternoon watching the leaves surrounding our field mark the passage of fall and the progression of our season.
