A snapshot of a day at Orkeeswa

Kayla Zheng

Hi blog,
We started today by eating breakfast at around 8:40.

Breakfast was delicious. Everyone enjoyed their omelets, fruits, yogurt, and so much more. There is always a wide range of great foods to eat for breakfast at Kutoka Lodge. After eating and sharing good laughs over the meal, we found ourselves driving to Orkeeswa Secondary School for the second time at 9:30. When we arrived at the school, it was tea time. During tea time, students enjoy some hot oatmeal with tea and coffee. The hot foods and beverages help the students stay extra warm on cold mornings. Then, we met up with our tour guides from yesterday and participated in their following classes. We went to Computer class, Robotics, English, and Art class. Everyone had so much fun, because our interactions with the Orkeeswa community become better with each moment.

After the class periods, we gathered for lunch. At lunch, we ate a satisfying meal prepared by Orkeeswa students’ parents, while the taekwondo team performed their medal-winning skits in front of the whole school. We had an amazing time not only due to the delicious meal in front of us, but also due to the power and confidence that fueled every stroke of the students in the taekwondo team. After witnessing the astounding performance, the girls (Kayla, Sagata, and Juwon) learned capoeira, while the boys (Jacques and Alejandro) joined a boxing lesson. It was a great way for us to move our bodies, learn new things, and bond with more students. Everyone left their activities with their hearts full and their mouths grinning.

To finish the school day, we engaged in Laurie’s class where she informed us and some 3rd form Orkeeswa students about the 17 U.N. Sustainable Development Goals, their relevance, and importance in creating a sustainable, peaceful, and healthy planet Earth. Laurie did a fascinating job in keeping everyone engaged, encouraging people to use their voices, and including everyone in discussions. After that, we got onto the bus and started our journey to pick up the rest of our crew. We are so excited to finally have a the whole group together after being seperated for the first five days!
