Daily Fun Builds Spirit for St. Mark's Day

Dress-up days and silly mid-morning contests generated Groton spirit throughout the week of November 7, building enthusiasm for the contest against longtime rival St. Mark’s School that Saturday.

Every term, Spirit Week precedes St. Mark’s Day, which celebrates a rivalry between the two schools that dates back to 1886.

Students join a variety of daily competitions to rack up points for their dormitories. On Monday, “Favorite Teacher Day,” students dressed as their favorite teachers. Tuesday got ghoulish as students embodied spirits in honor of “Supernatural Day.” Wednesday was jersey day, followed by nostalgic Throwback Thursday. On Friday, students embodied their “spirit animals,” resulting in zoological costumes well beyond Groton’s beloved zebra.

At conference period each day, students shared hidden talents in “minute-to-win-it” games—they flipped bottles, participated in a pie-eating contest, played musical chairs, and stood stone-still for the “Mannequin Challenge.” (See the very still video on our multimedia page.)

Dorms accrued points throughout the week—for winning dress-up contests, giving announcements at Roll Call (more points for the “best announcement”), and for participating (or winning) the “minute-to-win-it” challenges.

One boys dorm and one girls dorm wins Spirit Week. But the whole Groton community wins with the increased school spirit as we face down our rival on St. Mark’s Day. Go Zebras!
