Athletes of the Week

Dorrie Varley-Barrett ( GVLAX/ VIth form)--This week the Groton girls split the week with a great win against Brooks and a heart breaking, one goal loss against Middlesex. Although there were many goals to be scored in each of these games, it was senior defender, Dorrie Varley-Barrett, that stood out for the Zebras this week. With outstanding poise and leadership on the field, Dorrie took control of Groton's defensive unit, and helped to dictate the pace of the opposing attack. Dorrie lead the team in ground balls this week, picking up an impressive 8. She also won two critical draw controls against Middlesex, creating opportunities in the midfield as well.
--Rebecca Moore, Randi Dummont

Maddy Forbess (Track/Vth form)—This season Maddy has run the 1500, 800, and 3000. She ran the 3000 meter for the first time all season this Saturday placing 2nd in a time of 11:27.9. She has placed in every race she's run and she won the 800 meter at the ISHTTI meet.  Maddy has anchored the 4 x 400 team who have placed at every meet including a 1st at the ISHTTI meet.
--Bill Maguire, Sally Klose, Nihal Kayali, Ron Dixon

Arhtur Jelin (Var. Baseball/ Vth form)--Vth Former Arthur Jelin's hot bat sparked the baseball team to two big wins this week.  He had a game breaking, 2 RBI triple vs. Phillips Andover, and 3 hits, and the game winning RBI in our 2-1 win over Middlesex. He also earned the save on the mound against Middlesex, pitching the last two innings to secure the win.
--Glenn DiSarcina, Ian Gracey, Art Cheeks, Tim LeRoy

Dan Herdiech (JV Baseball/ IIIrd Form)--Dan has been a great example all season for the JV Baseball team for his hard work, hustle, and positive attitude.  This week he was instrumental in our victory over Middlesex, notching a pair of key hits, adding in some heads up running on the basepaths, and striking out three in two innings work to earn the save.  For the week, he had a .667 batting average and .800 OBP with 2 runs, an RBI, and a stolen base.
--Ron Mazzaferro, Preston Bannard, Scott Giampetruzzi

Lachlan Combs (BJVLAX/IIIrd Form)-- Our first day together as a team in the gym, I asked a loaded question - "is anyone willing to try goalie?"  Fortunately, one hand went up and Lachlan, who had previously played middie, became our MVP before the season had even started.  He has progressed rapidly since late March allowing the team to become more competitive and has been one of the main factors behind our three league wins so far.  He was absolutely pivotal in Wednesday's overtime win over Brooks and kept us in the Middlesex game over the weekend against a stronger, deeper team with some exceptional saves and strong clearing passes.
--Jamie Funnell, Peter Fry
