Sunday Snow

The Groton campus has been barren of snow for much of this winter. Despite droughts of cold and dips below freezing, we had yet to have a true New England winter coating. This all changed as I woke up this Sunday morning, groggily making my way out of the doors of my dorm.

I had seen trickling flakes of snow beginning to cake the walkways of campus the night before as I returned from "Casino Night," but finally, this morning, our campus was entrenched in snow in true winter form. Nearly a foot of snow lay before each step and the onslaught of snowflakes pelted my face but everyone was giddy at the sight of the first snow. No true snowy day at Groton is complete without an ample amount of time outdoors. Today was no different. People gathered their winter jackets that had long since seen use from the back of their closets and pulled on ill-fitting gloves to make the plunge into the cold outdoors, and onto the sledding hill behind the athletic center. My brief time outdoors, however, was spent later in the day. After many long hours of work, I braved the cold and left the Schoolhouse for the Athletic Center and our afternoon lacrosse team captains' practice. Adorning athletic shorts and t-shirts our team passed around in the gym and enjoyed what would devolve into a game of full-court basketball. Drenched in sweat and well-spent for the Sunday, we began to pick up as someone popped the question “Snow Bath?” Unfortunately, no one voiced their concerns and it did not take long for all of us to rush outdoors and dive head-first into a layer of snow. Covered in snow and screaming from the cold, we pushed our way back inside away from the cold slipping everywhere as we went. I turned around from a safe distance indoors and watched as one of my teammates took a comic book slip and fell on his way back in. We shared a good laugh but kept it brief as we were eager to get warm again. Ultimately, it was not long spent fully engulfed in the snow, but the brief stint made my Sunday complete and checked off the boxes of a true Groton snow day.
