Dramatic Win Over St. Mark's for Groton Baseball

Superb pitching, extra innings, and a game-winning steal at home plate clinched a dramatic win for boys varsity baseball over rival St. Mark’s on Saturday, May 28.

Groton baseball’s fifth consecutive St. Mark’s Day win relied heavily on two young pitchers—Third Former Shane Kim, who started on the mound for the Zebras and didn’t give up a hit until the sixth inning, and Second Former Josh Nam, who stepped in and tidily secured the win.

Groton’s bats were moving early too, with a line drive triple from Eddy Uong ’17 in the first inning, followed by a single from Ward Betts ’16 that sent Eddy home and put the Zebras up 1–0.

In the second inning, a sacrifice fly from Cam Schmitt ’18 brought home Bennett Smith ’19. Due to Shane’s tireless work on the mound, St. Mark’s remained scoreless until the sixth inning, when they evened the tally at 2–2.

Tension built as the score remained tied until the final inning. But Second Former Josh Nam relieved Shane on the mound and pitched a quick three-up-three-down inning. The Zebras could not get a run across in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. Josh pitched a solid eighth inning, facing just four batters.

Then, in the bottom of the eighth, the Zebras took off. Arthur Jelin ’16 led with a line drive single to left field. After Eddy got to first base on a walk, both he and Arthur stole. Paul Malone ’18 was at bat with Eddy and Arthur on second and third, respectively. On the second pitch to Paul, Arthur broke loose again as the pitcher started his windup.

Arthur slid in safely, stealing home and sealing a 3–2 Groton victory in his final contest as a Zebra!

Josh earned the first win of his high school career, making him the youngest Groton pitcher ever to beat St. Mark’s.
