Student to Student in the Writer's Room

Members of English teacher John Capen’s Writing Short Fiction class recently traveled to Boston to work with students in the Writer’s Room program at the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics & Science.
The Writer’s Room, part of 826 Boston (a nonprofit that provides support for young writers in the Roxbury area of Boston), is an actual room in the high school where students come to write.

O’Bryant students were working on a history project based on the recent popular Broadway play Hamilton. Using one of a variety of presentation options--including spoken verse, a video diary, and a skit--along with a required research paper, they delved into and illustrated a historical topic of their choice.

Mr. Capen was drawn to the Writer’s Room after a successful class trip there last year and the aforementioned connection to Hamilton (a play Mr. Capen loves).

The Groton students worked together as tutors for the welcoming group of O’Bryant students in a fruitful collaborative environment.

After a couple of hours in the Writer’s Room, Mr. Capen’s class went to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts to view many fascinating exhibits, including “Megacities Asia,” which featured thousands of objects typically found in cities such as Delhi, Shanghai, and Seoul.—George Klein ’16
