Kick-Off to College Counseling Prepares Parents for Process

Groton’s College Counseling Office welcomed more than 120 parents to the Circle January 29–30 for its third annual Kick-Off to College Counseling program.
Designed to provide parents of Fifth Formers (juniors) with a broad introduction to the college admissions process—and to the College Counseling Office’s philosophy and program—the weekend featured a lively keynote address by James Nondorf, dean of College Admissions and Financial Aid at the University of Chicago. Nondorf provided a glimpse into a selective college’s admission process, making parents more familiar and comfortable with the process.

During the weekend, parents also met with their children’s college counselors and took advantage of admissions officer-led workshops focused on topics including the college visit, the essay, and financial aid.

“We are glad that so many parents were able to join us for this program as we begin working with the Fifth Form,” said Director of College Counseling Megan Harlan. “We are fortunate to have wonderful admissions colleagues who share their expertise with our families, and we hope that Groton parents find the information useful in supporting and empowering their children through the college process.”
