Broad Reach for Lessons and Carols, Beloved Christmas Tradition

Groton School's favorite holiday tradition, the Service of Nine Lessons & Carols, reached out from St. John's Chapel to distant corners of the world, spreading Christmas spirit through an event that has been in place since 1928.

Groton broadcast the December 17 service live, and 933 people tuned in—from Argentina, Canada, China, France, Hong Kong, Korea, Saint-Barthelemy, and Thailand, as well as from all over the United States.

That service, for Groton students, faculty, and staff, was the last of three. The first service, December 11, welcomed the public, continuing a celebration that many residents of the Town of Groton look forward to each year. The second service, December 13, was dedicated to parents and alumni, a nostalgic moment and a reminder of Groton's enduring traditions.

As always, Groton's Choir, under the guidance of Choirmaster and Organist Daniel Moriarty, sang traditional hymns and carols, while honorees shared the nine religious readings—the lessons. Among the readers were Headmaster Temba Maqubela, former Headmaster Bill Polk, Assistant Head Katherine Bradley, and several students. The Reverend Dr. Danielle Tummino presided, and the service began with a prelude by the Groton School Chamber Orchestra, directed by Tim Terranella.

The final Lessons & Carols service marks the start of the school vacation, and Groton School sends warm holiday wishes to all!
