The Art of GUAC

On November 10, the Groton Undiscovered Artists’ Collaborative (GUAC) held its first “pop-up show” in the Dillon Art Center.
The club was started this year by the 2015–16 art prefects, who felt that numerous Groton artists were unsung, while only those who took many art classes and won awards were receiving recognition. GUAC was born from a desire to bring art past the Art Center and art classes and into the community.

Day to day, GUAC shares art through its Instagram account, which is followed by almost two-thirds of the student population. Students submit art works to the art prefects, who then caption and post the works. The pieces range from beautifully photorealistic paintings on canvas done over summer breaks to a teacher’s doodles on his students’ old math quizzes.

Tuesday's show presented works already featured on the Instagram page, as well as others that had not been seen before. During the pop-up show, Echo Zhuge '16, an art prefect, and MacGregor Beatty '17, gave short talks on works that they had completed during their afternoon Faculty Sponsored Activities (FSAs).

Faculty also exhibited works: photography and quiz doodles by math teacher Jon Creamer and marble-carved stamps commissioned by Latin teacher Dr. Andres Reyes. Students from all forms contributed to the show in media such as photography, embroidery, knitting, ceramics, and collage.

The whole school was invited to see the pieces from 6:30–8:00 p.m. The pop-up show was a wonderful success, and the second one is already in the works!Suzy K., Art Prefect
