The School
Groton is a five-year college preparatory, coeducational, boarding school with an enrollment of 372 students: 194 boys, 180 girls; 301 boarders and 73 day students and faculty/staff children. A breakdown by Forms is as follows: Form II (8th grade) - 27; Form III (9th grade)- 73; Form IV (10th grade) - 86; Form V (11th grade) - 95; Form VI (12th grade) - 91.
Admissions
For the academic year 2010-2011, Groton enrolled 90 new students: 49 boys and 41 girls. 27 came as Second Formers; 48 as Third Formers; 10 as Fourth Formers; 4 as Fifth Formers and 1 as a Sixth Former.
The Faculty
The Groton faculty and administration includes 87 full and part-time members. Most classes at Groton have 12 - 14 students per class.
Tuition and Financial Aid
For the 2010 - 2011 academic year, the inclusive tuition and fees charge is $48,895 for boarders and $37,020 for day students. Tuition income provides for less than 50% of the real cost of educating each student; therefore, all students in a certain sense receive financial assistance provided by endowment income and annual giving. In addition, students receive $4.4 million in direct financial assistance from the School.
Diploma Requirements
Minimum diploma requirements at Groton include: English - through fall term of the Sixth Form year; Mathematics - one term beyond Algebra II; History -United States and Modern European; Science - an upper school laboratory Science course; (Modern or Classic)Language - at least three years of either French, Greek, Latin, or Spanish; Religion and Ethics - a two-term course, Biblical Studies, and one other elective in Ethics; Art - the Visual Foundations course in either Second or Third Form, and one elective course in the Upper School.
In addition, there are numerous electives and Advanced Placement offerings in every major discipline. There are also individual Form requirements. For example, Second and Third Forms take both a classical and a modern language for two years.
The CampusGroton's 400-acre campus includes fields and woodlands as well as academic buildings and dormitories. Much of the campus borders the Circle, including St. John's Chapel, the Schoolhouse, Brooks and Hundred House Dormitories, the McCormick Library (60,000 volumes), the Campbell Performing Arts Center, the Dining Hall, the Dillon Art Center and De Menil Gallery. Other facilities include the Alumni House, New Athletic and Recreation Center, Pratt and OBrien Rinks and Tennis Center, the Bingham Boathouse, and many faculty homes.
