Performing ArtsThe performing arts at Groton offer a variety of opportunities for students to challenge themselves creatively through individual and collaborative projects in three major forms, music, drama and dance. Much of the programming in the performing arts at Groton can be for academic credit, but the goals of the performing arts students extend beyond academic recognition to the mastery of skills and technique and the development of aesthetic awareness.
A wide range of courses are offered in the performing arts and along with the afternoon programs provide students with opportunities for scene study, improvisation and direction, solo and group performances in voice and instrumental music as well as drama and dance. There are several singing groups, a chamber orchestra and smaller ensembles conducted by music faculty. Lessons are offered in all orchestral instruments, as well as organ, piano, guitar, drums, steel drums and bagpipes. Typically, there are three major theatre productions in the year, providing the opportunity to act, work backstage in costume and set design and set building and stage tech work in a state of the art theatre seating 466.
