On the Nashua River at Groton, you have the unique opportunity of seeing the start of a race because our races start right opposite the dock from our boathouse. If you choose to watch form the dock, you will see the crews when they are dead even and when they are very close to you. If you’ve never seen the start of a race up close before, we recommend that you visit the boathouse to see one. Some energetic spectators follow the race by running or biking along the trail that runs along the river. If you do this, you can see a great deal of the race.
You can access the Bingham Boathouse, which is right on the Groton campus, by driving around behind the hockey rinks, parking there and walking the ½ mile down the dirt road to the river. There is very limited parking at the boathouse, most of it will be needed for the visiting team’s shells. It is all right to drop off spectators at the boathouse.
The other option is to watch from near the finish line. Drive past the School on Rt. 111 (Farmers Row) and turn left on Rt. 225. Continue until you cross the river on a small bridge and then park on the left at the Nashoba Paddlers, a good place that rents canoes and kayaks. Their parking is limited, but they are friendly and will most likely be amenable to letting you park there. On the bridge you will be able to see the boats coming at you for the last 250 meters of the race.
Groton parents of boys and girls rowing and coxing are invited to watch the race from one of our motorboats. Come down to the boathouse a bit early and identify yourself to the Groton coaches. We can usually squeeze you into a launch so that you can watch the race close-up.
We look forward to seeing you at the races!
