Alumni in Sports

  • Many alumni participate in the Head of the Charles each year. At the 2011 event, among those rowing were Rob Black ’10 (for Trinity College), Mary Cooper ’08 (who coxed that Water Cat Masters 4), Nason Hamlin ’64 (for Wesleyan alumni), James Higgins ’02 (for Yale), Henry Hoffstot ’09 and Kerri McKie ’09 (for Georgetown), Alex Karwoski ’08 (for Cornell), Ruth Kennedy ’79 (for the Cambridge Boat Club Senior Masters 8), Liza MacEachern ’10 (for Radcliffe), Julia May ’10 (for Williams), Ted Patton ’84 (a 1988 Olympian), Faith Richardson ’11 (for Princeton), and Penn Williamson ’59 (in the Senior Veteran Singles). In a waterborne family affair, brothers George Hatch ’76 and Whitney Hatch ’73 rowed with their brother-in-law Fred Whitridge ’73 in the Director's Challenge quad.
  • Katie Gannett ’06 earned Brown University's Arlene Gorton Cup, presented to her at the Third Annual Brown Senior Banquet in May of 2011. The cup is awarded to the female varsity athlete who most consistently displays the ideals of sportsmanship and fair play. At Groton, Katie played soccer, basketball, and lacrosse and was notable for her hard work, sportsmanship, and skill. As a sixth former, she won the Frothingham Award.
  • As a four year varsity tennis player at Washington and Lee University, Treslie Sadler ’08 has been a first team ODAC conference selection, a winner of the Southeast Regional D III  Doubles title, and a Doubles Div III All American. In the 2010-2011 season, she and her doubles partner were ranked 13th in the nation and fourth in the region. In her senior season, she is team captain and enters her final campaign with a 29-19 singles record and a 42-25 doubles mark. 
  • The American Hockey Coaches Association released its College Division All-American Teams in March. Lake Forest College player and Groton alum Kimmie Herring '06 was the only sophomore to earn First Team honors. She set new single-season team records for points, goals, and assists and ranks among the top four in Lake Forest history in career points (73) and goals (42). In addition, Kim was named NCHA Player of the Year.
  • Standout goalie Greg Parker '06 was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Rookie of the Year in 2007, while a student at Connecticut College. To earn that distinction, he led the NESCAC with a .922 save percentage.
  • Groton baseball star David Orlowitz '07 started in centerfield for the Tufts University baseball team this year. "Orly" batted .315 and Tufts went to the finals of the NCAA regional tournament finishing their season at 34-7.
  • Cornell honored Groton's Cole Papakyrikos '09 by naming him MVP of the Freshman rowing class. Cornell coach, Todd Kennett, made the announcement after Cole's efforts helped his Heavyweight Frosh eight earn the Bronze medal at the 2010 Eastern Sprints at Worcester's Lake Quinsigamond.
  • Gabriella Flibotte '09 made the Northwestern varsity lax team as a freshman and Meredith Frank, the team's assistant coach writes " Gabby is excelling as I knew she would. She is a star, and I know that there are bright things in her future! She truly has endless potential both athletically and academically." Northwestern seeks to repeat for its 7th straight national title.
  • Groton lacrosse star Samantha McMahon '06 was an unanimous selection for co captain for Harvard's Women's Lacrosse Team next season. She will share duties with another team mate-Tyler Petropolus.
  • Caroline Bierbaum '02 was one of four finalists for the Honda Sports Award, given to the nation's top women's collegiate cross-country runner in her junior year at Columbia. She also earned the Ivy League Championship and All-American accolades
  • Hilary Maddox '96 lead her Princeton Women's Lacrosse team to the NCAA Division I Lacrosse Final Four three out of her four years at Princeton ('98,'99, '00).
  • Liane Malcos '96 rowed on Brown University's National Championship Eight in 2000, and also represented the United States at the Nations Cup in Italy, where she won a silver medal.
  • Claudia Asano '95 was Co-Captain of the Harvard Women's Hockey team that went 33-1 and won the AWCHA National Championship in 1999 That squad also captured the Ivy League, Beanpot, ECAC Regular Season and ECAC Tournament titles. She also served as the captain of the Harvard women's lacrosse team and earned second-team All-Ivy honors in that sport. She has also served as the assistant coach of the Harvard Women's Hockey team and also coached the USA Hockey Girls Select 14-15 Player Development Camp.
  • Henry Nuzum '95 not only captained the Harvard Crew Team his senior year, but went on to compete for USA at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the 2001 World Championships, and the 2004 Olympics in Greece. While at Groton, Henry helped the Boys' team to both a NEIRA title in 1994 and a National Title in 1995.
  • Margaret Metz '95 was the only three-sport varsity letter winner at Wesleyan in 1995-96 (field hockey, ice hockey and lacrosse) She went on to earn NFHCA Division III All-American honors and was the recipient of Wesleyan's Jones Award.
  • Abigail Cromwell '95 rowed on three National Championship crews at Princeton and went on to win a bronze medal at the 2002 World Rowing Championships in Spain.
