Many performing arts courses may be taken for academic credit, but Groton's performing arts students aspire not just to academic success but to the mastery of skills and technique and the development of aesthetic awareness.
A wide range of courses and afternoon programs provide students with opportunities for scene study, improvisation and direction, and solo and group performances in voice and instrumental music as well as in drama and dance. Students may choose among several singing groups, a chamber orchestra, and smaller ensembles conducted by our music faculty. Lessons are offered in all orchestral instruments, as well as organ, piano, guitar, drums, steel drums, and bagpipes. Typically, the School stages three major theatrical productions each year, providing students with the change to act, work on costume and set design, built sets and do stage tech work--all in a state-of-the-art theater that seats 466.
Performance artists, theater and dance ensembles, and musicians often bring events to campus, to entertain and enrich the community.
